Diane Macinnes

Diane’s Relationship with clay has been a meditative, intimate, intuitive journey, always evolving and transforming for over 6 decades.

Inspired by the tones and textures of the natural world, her intention is to express subtle human emotion transcending barriers, creating a story that is felt differently by each viewer.

Her work is a challenging exploration of materials and techniques - even joyful accidents.  She has used a variety of firing techniques to accentuate texture, sometimes unpredictable often intriguing color variation and the particular qualities of different clay bodies.

Each piece is a hand built unique expression – a story, often motivated by human struggle, a source of healing, or an inner dialog. It is only when a piece begins to communicate something indefinable, perhaps shocking or surprising that Diane feels a transformative current that she follows to completion.

Born in New York City, Diane has lived, traveled or studied in various locales both in the U.S. and abroad.  She earned a BFA in sculpture and art education from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, culminating in the creation of a 7’ floating female figure, designed for placement in a pond.

While teaching at the Van den Burg Learning Center, SUNY New Paltz, she earned an MS in Art Education with a photography emphasis. There she explored the natural landscape with a 4 x 5 view camera, creating black and white large format prints. The theme of her thesis show was the mystery of water: moving, still, misty, or frozen, always shifting and alive.

Diane taught for 35 years, infusing her creativity into the souls of her students. She now works out of her home studio in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she lives with her husband, fine art photographer, Warren Marr – www.warrenmarr.com  We welcome clients by appointment.
