Artist Statement
My work comes from an interest in many things – maybe too many to mention – that have come together in a way that finally makes sense, after a long time of exploration. Design, color, function (or not), varied processes, narrative, emotion, mood, craftsmanship and quality, are all considerations.
I’ve been a ceramic artist most of my life. In the last 9 I have introduced printmaking. Its methods appeal to me because, like clay, there is the challenge of achieving a balance between a systematic, process-oriented approach and the ability to let go and allow the elements of spontaneity and surprise.
From my experiences designing and producing multiples in clay I’ve been led to a similar path of creating many images in printmaking. By designing matrixes, through processes such as intaglio and stenciling, I can create many images for multiple uses. One of those uses has been to make ceramic decals. This process is one way that allows me to combine my love of these 2 mediums.
As an artist it is my intent to create hand made and decorative works that hold a sense of craftsmanship and history of art but can still be afforded and collected for the purpose of everyday use and enjoyment.
