Statement

NMPCA artist Dorothy Bassett, Santa FeAs a nature enthusiast and avid gardener, my work is a direct reflection of the natural world that surrounds me. I create functional porcelain vessels- bowls, jars and vases - that integrate careful craftsmanship and connection to place.  Each piece is shaped with intention, then refined with surface carving and delicate embellishments made from thin sheets of clay. These elements add dimension and texture, echoing the layered complexity found in leaves, flowers and other botanical forms.  Pollinators and other garden inhabitants frequent my creations.

My glazing process is intuitive and painterly. I blend tones to create surfaces that sometimes echo the softness of watercolor washes or the transparency of stained glass.

While each piece is designed to function in daily life, I also see them  as quiet reflections of the natural world- objects that carry with them a sense of place and presence and a bit of joy.
