Statement

NMPCA artist Dorothy Bassett, Santa Fe

As someone who loves nature and gardening, my work is inspired by the world around me.  I make functional porcelain pieces - bowls, jars and vases- that are meant to be used and enjoyed every day.

Each piece is carefully shaped by hand, then finished with carved details and botanical images made from thin sheets of clay, adding texture and depth. I am especially drawn to the patterns and forms found in plants, flowers and leaves, and I often include details inspired by pollinators and other garden life.

My glazing process is intuitive and painterly.  I layer and blend colors to create soft, fluid surfaces, sometimes similar to watercolor or the light that comes through stained glass.
